The Insane Engineering of the Biggest Submarine in U.S. History

The USS Kentucky is a 560-foot nuclear submarine that makes highway bridges pull apart just so it can do its work. It isn’t the biggest submarine ever, and it’s main sonar can’t even send a ping. Yet when 60 Minutes asked its captain if anyone had ever found his boat, he said, “No. Not even close.” But how could you possibly hide nearly 19000 tons of submarine, up to 20 nuclear missiles and more than 150 people for months at a time? That’s what we will dive into in this video, we will ride along on one full patrol to find out. Youll see the reactor that fills up once in a 42 year lifespan, a nav system that crosses an entire ocean without GPS, and the bunks that get tucked in between the missile tubes. You’ll also learn why food, not fuel, decides when a patrol ends, and why the shopping list for a 3 month patrol includes over 20,000 eggs and about 500 bags of microwave popcorn…because priorities. We will open the missile compartment, sit in on a launch drill and find out what really lit up the sky over Southern California in November of 2015. Unfortunately it wasn’t aliens. Last but not least we will answer the question of just why a boat built to disappear could get given the nickname the king of submarines.
