Drake Passage — The World’s Most DANGEROUS Ocean

The Drake Passage is the deadliest open ocean a passenger ship is allowed to cross — 600 miles of water with no land to slow the wind, a current carrying 150 times more water than every river on Earth combined, and waves that have sunk roughly 800 ships across five centuries. This is the only road to Antarctica. We followed John and Colleen aboard the World Navigator — a 10,000-ton expedition ship by Atlas Ocean Voyages — for an 11-day voyage from Ushuaia to the Antarctic Peninsula and back. They got the Drake Lake on the way down. On the way back, they got the Drake Shake — 40-foot waves, water at the Deck 4 cabin window, and 30 hours of corkscrew motion through the Furious Fifties. What kept 281 people upright in water that's been sinking better-equipped vessels for 500 years isn't luck. It's a Polar Code Category C hull, Ice Class 1B reinforced steel, two active stabilizer fins flattening 70% of the roll before anyone inside feels it, GPS-locked thrusters holding position over 1,600 feet of water, and waterjet propulsion quiet enough that whales don't notice the ship until it's right next to them. This is how the engineering works — and how a ship lets you order a cocktail while crossing the worst water on Earth.
