Inside the World’s Largest Airplane Ever Built

This is the Stratolaunch Roc, the biggest airplane flying anywhere on Earth, and one of the strangest machines ever built. Its wing spans 385 feet, longer than an NFL football field including both end zones, a record certified by Guinness as the largest wingspan ever flown. It rides on 28 wheels, flies with 6 engines stripped from two retired United Airlines Boeing 747s, and carries two complete fuselages, one with a 3-person crew, and one with cockpit windows but nobody inside. In this video, we take you around the entire aircraft, piece by piece, to understand why every part of it is shaped the way it is. Why the payload hangs between two bodies instead of under one. Why the pilots land it from a cockpit nearly 50 feet off the aircraft's centerline, using an instrument the crew calls the crab-o-meter. Why the biggest new airplane in the world is, by weight, about half used airplane. And what all 385 feet of it actually exists to do: carry the Talon-A, a Cessna-sized autonomous rocket plane that accelerates past Mach 5 and lands itself, America's first reusable hypersonic aircraft since the X-15 retired in 1968. From the hand-built carbon-fiber wing in the Mojave Desert to more than 10 hypersonic missions flown for the Pentagon by 2026, this is the full story of the biggest plane ever built now, and the strange, brilliant logic behind its shape.
