Why are there TWO Portlands in the USA 🇺🇸 and how did Portland Oregon and Portland Maine end up with the exact same name on opposite sides of the country? This is Portland Oregon, the largest city in Oregon 🌲 and this is Portland Maine, one of the largest cities in Maine 🌊 same name but completely different coasts. So who thought this was a good idea? Well… the story begins after the American Revolution ⚔️ when the town of Falmouth was destroyed and rebuilt, and eventually renamed Portland after the English Isle of Portland 🇬🇧 Almost a century later, as the United States expanded west to the Pacific Ocean, a new city appeared on the banks of the Columbia River, and it needed a name. Two founders, two choices: Boston or Portland 🤔 They couldn’t agree… so they flipped a coin 🪙 And just like that — Portland Oregon got its name. This is why there are two Portlands in the USA and how one random coin flip changed history 😄 #portland #portlandoregon #portlandmaine #oregon #maine #usa #geography #history #ushistory #citynames #maps #americanhistory #map #geographyfacts
