<description>A failing heart can be replaced with a healthy donor heart. This animation follows the operation step by step: opening the chest, letting a heart-lung machine take over, removing the old heart, sewing in the new one, and the moment it starts beating again. During surgery, the heart-lung bypass machine does the work of the heart and lungs. The operation takes about 4 to 10 hours. Afterwards, patients take anti-rejection medicine for the rest of their lives to stop the immune system from attacking the new heart.
