Tristan da Cunha is one of the most remote inhabited islands in the world 🏝️ Just over 200 people live on this tiny island in the South Atlantic Ocean, almost 2,500 km from their nearest neighbors. But how did people end up there? It all started with Napoleon Bonaparte 🇫🇷 After the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, Britain sent Napoleon to Saint Helena and stationed troops on Tristan da Cunha. When the British garrison left, a small group decided to stay and build a permanent settlement. More sailors later joined the island and five women arrived from Saint Helena to join the growing community. According to legend, the captain who brought them was rewarded with sacks of potatoes 🥔 Over time more families and sailors arrived. Today, 97% of Tristan da Cunha islanders share just seven surnames 🤯 #tristandacunha #isolatedplace #remoteisland #island #sainthelena #britishhistory #britishoverseasterritories #learn #maps #learning #history #geography
