Why Broadway Splits Manhattan🗽 New York’s Oldest Street 🇺🇸

Why does Broadway cut diagonally across Manhattan while almost every other street follows a perfect grid? Broadway is the oldest road in New York City. Long before Europeans arrived, the Indigenous Lenape people used this route to travel between settlements 🏕️. The trail followed the natural shape of Manhattan, passing around swamps, rocks, steep slopes and thick forests. Over time, it became known as the Wickquasgeck Trail. After the Dutch founded New Amsterdam 🇳🇱 they widened the existing Lenape trail and turned it into an important road. When the British took control 🇬🇧 renamed the city New York and looked at the road, they gave it a very creative name: Broad Way. In 1811, the Commissioners’ Plan created Manhattan’s famous street grid 📐 But Broadway was already too important as a transportation and commercial route to remove, so the city simply built the grid over it. Where Broadway crossed Manhattan’s straight streets, unusual open spaces appeared 🏙️ Over time, they became Times Square, Herald Square, Union Square and Madison Square, some of the most famous places in New York City 🗽 #nyc #newyork #newyorkcity #broadway #manhattan #usa #manhattanhistory #timessquare #heraldsquare #unionsquare #madisonsquare #nycfacts #nyhistory #americanhistory #ushistory #unitedstates #history #geography #maps #learn
