Google is planning to release 32 million mosquitoes in California, but not to make the problem worse. The project is called Debug, and its goal is to fight dangerous mosquitoes using “good bugs.” 🦟 The main target is Aedes aegypti, one of the most dangerous mosquito species in the world because it can spread diseases like dengue, Zika and chikungunya. Mosquitoes are often called the deadliest animals on Earth because mosquito-borne diseases kill more people than any other animal. Debug raises millions of male mosquitoes, separates them from the females, and infects them with a natural bacterium called Wolbachia. Since male mosquitoes don’t bite, they can be released into the wild. But when these “good bugs” mate with wild females, the eggs don’t hatch, slowly reducing the mosquito population. Debug has already shown results in Singapore, where around 10 million “good bugs” are released every week, helping reduce mosquito populations and dengue cases by more than 80%. And now Google is seeking federal approval to release these Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes across California and Florida. #debug #mosquitoes #mosquito #goodbugs #california #florida #usa #unitedstates #states #northamerica #mosquitocontrol #google #science #biology #geography #maps #learn
